a wild mind won’t find a peaceful place

B4Peace October: This month’s Peace Challenge – a Dream of Peace, is kind of aborted before it’s started. All apologies.

I have the most chaotically un-peaceful mind just now, which doesn’t even want to sit still, let alone watch the shallow breathing that’s going on.

insomnia

My uncontrolled mind just wants to sleep, which it can’t; or watch random movie trailers on You Tube.
(and I know I’m not the only one.)
Yup. Failing to find oblivion and desperate for release, my mind is scrabbling around for whatever easy and vacuous distraction it can find.
Anything but the tears/depression/anxiety/hopeless internal rage. And did I mention the tears?

Perverse isn’t it?
My agitated mind doesn’t even want peace!
I do, I want to sit quietly, being peace. I’m missing that blissful state of mind.

** I’m trying to count my breaths, which does seem to help :~)

My Dream of Peaceful Place

So I think that’s what my Dream of a Peaceful World would be like.
It would be a world where everybody genuinely wanted peace, and everyone knew how to get it.
And could!

* Where the power hungry destroying our planet, and the discontented wasting their time surfing online, were equally rich in inner wisdom.
✿ڿڰۣ

Then naturally, beauty and order would prevail.
And the world would be a peaceful place.

The Universe is abundant. There is quite enough time, space, food, water and resources for us all.
* This is scientific fact as well
So there’s no reason for anybody to go short; and certainly no good reason for anyone else to think that they should.

All beings would be regarded as equal, whatever their age, gender, race, belief system or species.
(The species thing is important. We can’t have real peace if behind closed doors or across the world, others are screaming out in pain, just not in our language.)

Where everyone is authentic to themselves and others.
There’s no point in deceit, so why do it?
Just be honest with yourself and others, and wish sincerely for their happiness.
Much better.

“Whatever you do in this world,
always be true to yourself.”

in fact…

all U need is love

all we need is love

…an excellent post on microcosmic perspectives.

I’m not the biggest fan of creepy-crawlies, but often rescue drowning critters.

Total respect to Buddha for stating that ALL in the animal realm have a body and mind; and as such don’t want to suffer anymore than I or anybody else does.

At 8.44pm GMT, the Sun passes the celestial equator moving south.
This marks the first day of Autumn in the northern hemisphere and the first day of Spring in the south.

BuddhaToday, September 22, is Buddha’s Return from Heaven Day, one of my favorite anniversaries of the Buddhist calendar. This is why I like it:

“On this day we celebrate Buddha’s return from the desire god realm called Land of the Thirty-three Heavens, where he had been to visit his mother who had been reborn there.

Traditionally this day also marks the end of the summer retreat. Every year, during the summer months, Buddha did a three-month retreat with his disciples. His reason for doing this was to avoid harming insects and other animals.

If we go out a lot during the summer months we will naturally kill more insects and other animals than at other times of the year. The nature of Buddhadharma is compassion – an unbiased compassion that is not just for human beings but for every living being, including animals.” ~ From a talk by Geshe Kelsang…

The Bell Meditation

“It’s the silence between the notes
that makes the music.”

– Zen Proverb

Figure from Pompeii

And it’s in the silent places in our mind where we find peace.
None of us want to be troubled and unhappy, but sometimes we just are.

This lack of peace in our own minds makes us experience and promote an unpeaceful world, causing feeling of disquiet to ripple outward from us.

Thich Nhat Hanh

So if we think, ‘I can’t do this’, or “What is the use of doing this? We may say that I do this because I want peace, I want happiness, I want healing and transformation. So the practice is the means, and healing and transformation is the end.”

˘˘
This sounds dualistic, but in reality it is a no-dualistic approach to healing, and to practice. We breathe in such a way that healing and peace are right here, in each breath. The means becomes the end, and there is no distinction between them.

There is no way to happiness, happiness is the way.”

Quotes from Thich Nhat Hanh,
Taken from plumvillageonline: Art of Suffering Retreat: First Talk.

The sound of the bell brings us back to peace

The Bell Meditation

We find peace in our mind by using the sound of the bell to bring us back to ‘the safe island of mindfulness.’
It is a simple means of bringing the mind back to it’s natural state of equilibrium.

* The titles here are each links – to Tich’s introduction, and to the bell meditation itself.

As Thich invites the bell to sound, he is also inviting us to share in the peace it radiates. The warm richness of the sound envelops us, inviting our minds to find total relaxation there.

We can use this next half hour to still our minds, and find our freedom within.
Just for the next half hour, where else would we want to be?

And what what better feeling to share with the world.

Within these meditations there are deeper and deeper levels of meaning for us to explore; each more beautiful than the last.

Breathing Peace, Tich Nhat Hanh

Cascais Post Box 10.13 Jpg

Dear ones, in these troubled times we need to be able to calm our minds.
We can do this by returning to the present moment.

This will enable us to let go of our constant worry, and and find peace in ourselves, which will naturally radiate out to others.
This makes us happier,
and enable us to be more focused in what we think and do.

Thich Nhat Hanhc

Breathing in, I calm body and mind.

Breathing out, I smile.

Dwelling in the present moment

I know this is the only moment.

Breathing in, I calm body and mind.”
This line is like drinking a glass of ice water. You feel the cold, the freshness, permeate your body. When I breathe in and recite this line, I actually feel the breathing calming my body, calming my mind.

Breathing out, I smile.
You know the effect of a smile. A smile can relax hundreds of muscles in your face, and relax your nervous system. A smile makes you master of yourself. That is why the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are always smiling. When you smile, you realize the wonder of the smile.

Dwelling in the present moment.”
While I sit here, I don’t think of somewhere else, of the future or the past. I sit here and I know where I am.

I know this is the only moment.”
This is the only moment that is real. To be here and now, and enjoy the present moment is our most important task.

Calming. Smiling, Present moment, Only moment.”

I hope you will try it.

Loti’s Hiatus Explained and Patiently Accepted

Cosmic Loti has had a bit of a hiatus of late.
Not all her fault. And when I say “patiently accepted“, that’s a wish path that’s improving with practice…
So, why I’ve been gone:
.
brain wiring
*  two consecutive MS attacks too close for comfort
.
*  work commitments
.
cube into a round hole
*  cosmic energy shifts
.
Cosmic Energy
*  heatwave in the UK
dog days

*  and karma
≠> ׵
So my approach?
(Which is a good trick when you can do it)

Watch each situation unfold
with patient acceptance

Patience is a mind that is able to accept, fully and happily, whatever occurs…having given up on the idea that things should be other than what they are.
Geshe Kelsang Gyatso
.
It is in this calm, clear space of patient acceptance that the most beautiful of things can happen.
As the Buddhist Master Shantideva said
“If something can be remedied
Why be unhappy about it?
And if there’s no remedy for it,
There is still no point in being unhappy.”
.
This is like releasing attachment to the outcome.
If we have done all we can then it’s best to physically and metaphorically step back from the situation. Surrender and have faith that all is as it should be, no matter what the outcome.
Not the easiest, but it does become more do-able when we’ve seen how well it works.

“Each human being exists within the context of interrelationships that include other human beings, all living beings and the natural world. In other words, each person is sustained by the interdependent web of life. By awakening to this principle we are able to expand instinctive self-love into an altruistic love for others; we are able to nurture the spirit of tolerance and empathy for others.”
