Plum Village Bell Meditation

The sound of the bell brings us back to peace.

* The Bell Meditation

We find peace in our mind by using the sound of the bell to bring us back to ‘the safe island of mindfulness.’
It is a simple means of bringing the mind back to it’s natural state of equilibrium.

For me, it is like the Breathing Meditation by Gen Tharchin, with the meaning of his words implied by the bell.
Within these meditations there are deeper and deeper levels of meaning for us to explore; each more beautiful than the last.

Breathing Peace, Tich Nhat Hanh

Cascais Post Box 10.13 Jpg

Dear ones, in these troubled times we need to be able to calm our minds.
We can do this by returning to the present moment.

This will enable us to let go of our constant worry, and and find peace in ourselves, which will naturally radiate out to others.
This makes us happier,
and enable us to be more focused in what we think and do.

Breathing in, I calm body and mind.

Breathing out, I smile.

Dwelling in the present moment

I know this is the only moment.

Breathing in, I calm body and mind.”
This line is like drinking a glass of ice water. You feel the cold, the freshness, permeate your body. When I breathe in and recite this line, I actually feel the breathing calming my body, calming my mind.

Breathing out, I smile.
You know the effect of a smile. A smile can relax hundreds of muscles in your face, and relax your nervous system. A smile makes you master of yourself. That is why the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas are always smiling. When you smile, you realize the wonder of the smile.

Dwelling in the present moment.”
While I sit here, I don’t think of somewhere else, of the future or the past. I sit here and I know where I am.

I know this is the only moment.”
This is the only moment that is real. To be here and now, and enjoy the present moment is our most important task.

Calming. Smiling, Present moment, Only moment.”

I hope you will try it.

Breathing Meditation by Gen Tharchin

To take an effective break, you just need to let go for awhile.
Put your thoughts on hold.

Just sit back, close your eyes and let go.
Whatever you were thinking about just then will wait for 5 or 10 minutes.

Follow your breath for awhile and come back refreshed.
Let the yogi Gen Tharchin tell us how…

“Sit in a relaxed comfortable position, with your back as straight as possible without being uncomfortable or tense.

And now scan through you body, looking at all the different parts of your body, one at a time, to make sure they’re comfortable and relaxed, free from tension or strain.
If you find any areas of tension, relax them.

And now turn your attention to the subtle sensation at the tip of your nostrils, or perhaps just inside your nostrils [or even on your lips], associated with each inhalation, each exhalation of the breath.

For a few moments, notice the slightly cooler sensation associated with the inhalation; and the slightly warming sensation, or pressure, associated with the exhalation.”

In this way, just observe the subtle tactile sensation of the breath for a few minutes.

As you finish, you may want to add ‘for the highest good of all’,
then slowly and gently come back your normal state of awareness.

Care is a Priceless Gift

“Your home is in the here and the now.”

Tich Nhat Hanh

This holiday season, we have a chance to express our love and care for Mother Earth by the way we care for our self, our family and our environment. We can practice mindfulness to care for our inner environment, our feelings and our emotions so that we do not lose our self in worries about the future or regrets about the past, or lose our self with our feelings and thinking in the present moment. We practice in such a way that we are peaceful, free and happy right in the here and now.

1 Week until Christmas? DON’T PANIC!

If you’re enjoying the run-up to Christmas, go for it!
Here’s wishing you and yours have a very merry time 🙂

But if the glittering excess of Christmas brings on a colder chill than the frost on Santa Clause’s sleigh…

end. pink bunny swing

Don’t Panic!

Fretting about next week now only brings it into the present.
Why ruin today by summoning the ghosts of Christmas past and future.
Live today while it’s here!

Enjoy your Christmas when it comes,
don’t worry about the expectations of others,
and forget it once it’s over.

Breathe the sigh of relief that only mindfulness of now can give.

Focus as well on a mind of love ~
hidden in all that tinsel and gift wrap there is genuine love.
But we can only touch this and share it with others if we’re true to ourselves.

Our Energy Follows Our Attention

+ = ˚͜˚

“We always have choice.”

This is one of the best things I’ve heard Geshe Kelsang say.
For me, it rates up there with “The things we normally see don’t exist“, and “Our mind appears objects.”

I love this because it frees us from the normal discomfort of life. It gives us the power to chose what happens in our life.
And how good is that?
Some of the best advice I’ve ever been given.
And it was personal advice given to thousands of people by
 my Spiritual Guide. *

Modern Buddhism: the flu

I can totally embrace this because it’s 8.30am, and I’ve been up 5 hours already. With M.S. spasticity and early morning wakening there’s no chance of staying in bed, it just hurts too much!
But today there’s also this sore throat, aching neck and a massive headache. Yup! After being run down for days the flu finally hit home on the first day of an unusually busy week.
Didn’t choose any of that.

But what I can choose – and this is the thing – is how I perceive and react to this big dollop of cosmic poo that’s landed on me.
The aspect of this I give my attention to, is what will become my reality. It’s how my day will unfold, what i’ll be able to do, and how I’ll be when I’m with others. It’s wether I collapse in bed when the day’s over in a tangle of raw nerves, alcohol and pain-killers; or in a snuggle of lovely warm furry babies, duvet and prayers.

That’s blissful for me – but everybody’s different – what magic will you choose to make?

We bring to ourselves what we focus on.

* nb ‘Personal Advice’

Another Buddhist mind-bender? Just how can advice given to a temple full of Buddhists be ‘personal‘?!
My understanding is that Buddha’s advice to his countless followers over thousands of years, is personal to each n’everyone of us – including the casual observer who sees a snippet on a greetings card – because it’s pertinent to our life right now. Try it out ~ see if it fits with where you are :~)
